Biography
Born in 1995 in Rouen, Chloé Kelly Miller lives and works in Paris. Her artistic practice began in 2018 alongside her studies in psychology, which later led her toward psychoanalysis. Her work is rooted in often automatic mechanisms, exploring and liberating the Unconscious.
Acrylics, photography, spray paint, ink, and drawing make up the various facets of a multifaceted body of work that, through a mise en abyme of the gaze, questions the constraints of personal expression. Among all subjects, the portrait holds a predominant place, unfolding through a spontaneous and eruptive approach that reveals shared images or latent sensations related to the experience of self and otherness. From pop culture icons to fragments of incomplete or wounded personal narratives, the artist explores questions of identity and representation by engaging directly with the subject, reevaluating the very mode through which being appears. In many cases, the canvas becomes a space of "visual epiphany," where the staging of the body and the application of color contribute to the sublimation of emotional states.
The diversity of mediums encourages the expression of a spontaneous, instinctual gesture, aimed at questioning action rather than the governing force of humanity: language. Dominated by colors and black backgrounds, her series evoke, like the unconscious itself, the presence of repressed emotions and their movement through the depths of the psyche.
Attentive to the personal trajectories of artists like Dalí, Basquiat, Keith Haring, Patti Smith, or Mapplethorpe, Chloé Kelly Miller revisits an artistic pantheon, suspends technique, and continuously reexamines its legacy. Surrealism and neo-expressionism are the artistic currents she finds most enriching. Their rawness and power challenge and question what is most primal, most profound. In the wake of these artists, Chloé Kelly Miller seeks in her own way to grasp the ungraspable—a dark and nebulous reality, a truth that is personal and unique.
Graduating as a clinical psychologist in 2019, she continued her research with the intention of preparing a doctoral thesis until June 2020. Since then, the artist has been fully dedicated to her artistic practice and collaborative work, joining new galleries on an international scale, taking part in solo and group exhibitions, and collaborating on various projects with designers, restaurateurs, sculptors, and textile creators.
From Bangkok to Paris, through Casablanca, Marseille, Toulouse, Rouen, and Bastia, Chloé Kelly Miller’s work continues to grow, questioning boundaries and language alike.
